Simple Tips to Control Skin Oiliness in the Heat

Summer is delicious, right? Sun, heat, pool ... But with the same intensity that the temperature rises during the season, the oiliness of the skin is present. If you have dry skin, you can even benefit from it, but if you have oily skin, controlling that shine can end up becoming a problem.

“The heat stimulates the sebaceous glands and, as we are in a tropical country, we have this reflex in a large part of the population. In addition, the use of products that dry the skin too often provoke a rebound effect, that is, oiliness and even acne may return worse ”, explains dermatologist Dr. Jardis Volpe, a member of the Brazilian Society of Dermatology and the Academy American Dermatology.

To help you with this, we have separated some simple things for you to include in your beauty routine and control the shine of oily skin.

Control skin oiliness in summer

Before you start with treatments and a beauty routine, it's important to know what your skin type is . That way, you will be able to tailor products according to your skin's needs. If your skin suffers from excessive oiliness, here is a smart routine to follow:

Cleaning

Begin your ritual by thoroughly cleaning your pores. “We can wash the skin with soaps that contain acids, such as glycolic or salicylic, which help to exfoliate it, removing mainly excess oil,” explains the professional. Plant extracts such as marigold can also be used. Cleaning is restricted to twice a day, the product cannot be too aggressive (abrasive), so as not to remove the protective barrier from the skin and stimulate the rebound effect. "Be careful not to enter a vicious cycle of imbalance and compensation," says the doctor.

Exfoliation

This step should take place two nights a week with the use of natural exfoliants. "Very abrasive products and with micro plastics can also remove the protective barrier from the skin too much."

Toning

“Right after the soap, it is interesting to use an astringent tonic with drying and bactericidal actives and that contains a small dose of alcohol. The tonic regulates the pH, promotes deep cleansing of the pores and helps in the penetration of active ingredients in later cosmetics ”, he explains. If your skin is sensitive, it is recommended to test the tonic before inserting it into your routine and, if necessary, opt for an alcohol-free one.

Hydration

But won't my skin get more oily if I apply a moisturizer? No. Hydration can - and should! - happen from the inside out, but applying a moisturizer specific to your skin type is essential. Oily skin is rich in oil, but poor in water!

Dr. Jardis' recommendation is to invest in oil-free moisturizers , gel or serum textures and assets that stimulate natural hydration. “Hydration is essential to avoid the rebound effect”, he explains.

Photoprotection

Summer or winter, dry or oily skin, on the beach or in the city: wearing a good sunscreen daily is the most important thing in a beauty routine. “In this case, it is necessary to find a specific product for oily and acne-prone skin, that is, one that has active oil control and a dry touch. It is recommended to use SPF of at least 30 and reapply every two hours in direct exposure ”, he says.

The effects of this beauty routine can be noticed quickly, but the change will happen, effectively, in the long run. Meanwhile, if you notice oily skin in the middle of the day, bet on oil-removing wipes or compact powder in specific areas. Remember not to wash your face repeatedly during the day so as not to further stimulate oil production, huh?
